The Growing Loneliness Crisis Among NSW Seniors

INS LifeGuard • November 18, 2024

New research by the Council on the Ageing (COTA) NSW has shed light on a troubling trend among older adults: a growing epidemic of loneliness and social isolation. The comprehensive report, Voices of Solitude: Loneliness and Social Isolation Among Older Adults in NSW, draws on survey data from over 2,200 individuals aged 50 and above across the state, providing a deep understanding of how widespread these issues have become and their significant impact on quality of life.

Key Findings of the Report

The findings reveal that loneliness is pervasive among NSW seniors, with 60% of respondents reporting that they feel lonely. Alarmingly, 25% suffer from extreme loneliness, and half of those surveyed are socially isolated. This paints a stark picture of older adults facing severe challenges in maintaining social connections and well-being.

Gohar Yazdabadi, CEO of COTA NSW, described the report’s findings as sobering. “Our findings paint a devastating picture of the extent of loneliness and social isolation among those aged 50 plus in our community,” she said.

Impact of Loneliness on Daily Life

The report underscores how loneliness profoundly affects older adults’ ability to perform daily activities. One in four older adults struggling with loneliness finds it difficult to complete everyday tasks such as shopping and cooking. Additionally, one in five lonely seniors is deterred from seeking essential medical care due to isolation.

An even more concerning discovery is that 40% of lonely older adults engage in social activities in person less than once a month. Shockingly, 11% report leaving their homes only once a month or less. These statistics highlight the severe limitations that loneliness imposes on the social and physical mobility of seniors, exacerbating health risks and mental decline.

Feeling Undervalued and Lacking Support

A significant aspect of the loneliness experienced by older adults relates to their perception of being undervalued by society. The survey found that among those feeling lonely, 60% do not feel valued by the community. This lack of societal recognition contributes to their sense of isolation and disconnection. Furthermore, 20% of respondents admitted they do not have someone to rely on, and 15% expressed that their family and friends do not care about them.

Ms. Yazdabadi emphasised how these feelings reflect deeper societal issues. “The feelings of being undervalued and without a support network are a terrible reflection of ageism and the way we value older people in our society, the impacts of which are keenly felt,” she said.

Moving Forward

The report by COTA NSW is a call to action for both policymakers and the broader community. Addressing loneliness among seniors is not just a matter of improving individual well-being; it is a reflection of how society values and supports its older population. By investing in programs and initiatives that foster connection and provide meaningful support, the impacts of this loneliness epidemic can be mitigated.
