Tropical Cyclone Alfred: Emergency Preparedness for LifeGuard-Connected Villages

INS LifeGuard • March 5, 2025

Tropical Cyclone Alfred has strengthened into a Category Two system and is expected to land between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast late Thursday or early Friday morning. The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of destructive winds, torrential rainfall, and the potential for life-threatening flash flooding across parts of Queensland and New South Wales.

As some of the villages we monitor fall within the projected impact zone, we want to remind village managers that our services remain fully operational and available to assist. Should your village require support during or following the cyclone, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Using the LifeGuard Manager’s Portal for Emergency Communication

The LifeGuard Manager’s Portal provides essential tools for village managers to communicate effectively with residents during emergencies:

Resident Notifications

Send critical messages that can be read aloud via compatible* LifeGuard alarm systems.

Emergency Evacuation Alerts

For compatible* devices, initiate an emergency evacuation alert and monitor resident responses in real time.

For guidance on using these features, please refer to our Manager’s Guide. This guide is also accessible from within in the portal under the Help (?) menu.

If you require further assistance from INS, such as making outbound calls to your residents, please contact us – we’re happy to assist. Some services may incur additional fees.

Additional Security for Residents: INS LifeGuardian® App

We encourage village managers to advise residents—particularly those living alone or with limited mobility—to download the INS LifeGuardian® app for iOS or Android devices for additional security. The app provides:

24/7 Nurse-On-Call Emergency Response

GPS Locator for Emergency Assistance

Fall Detection & Crash Alerts (with Apple Watch)

Geofence Alerts for At-Risk Individuals

Vital Sign Monitoring for Health & Well-being

Your residents will receive a one-month free trial of the full premium service, ensuring extra protection at no cost during this severe weather event. They can simply cancel the service after the event, before the trial ends, to avoid any charge.

Stay Informed & Prepared

INS LifeGuard remains committed to ensuring the safety of residents in all monitored villages. We’re here to support you and your residents throughout this severe weather event. Please use the Manager’s Portal as needed, and contact us if you require further assistance.

Stay safe and prepared.

Meeting fire safety best practices often include having interlinked smoke detectors in many homes, villages, and multi-unit dwellings, with specific regulations varying by state. Interlinked smoke detectors ensures that all alarms sound simultaneously when one alarm is triggered, providing maximum warning time. However, installing wired interlinked alarms can be costly, disruptive, or impractical, especially in older homes or buildings where electrical wiring is not feasible.

For years, individuals with disabilities, limited mobility, dexterity challenges, or conditions that make traditional emergency buttons difficult to use have relied on cumbersome devices like blow pendants and bite transmitters to call for help in emergencies. These solutions, while functional, come with significant limitations: They can be uncomfortable and inconvenient to use. They require physical interaction, which may not always be possible. If the device is out of reach, calling for help becomes impossible. What happens if a person in distress can’t reach their emergency button? This is where modern technology provides a more innovative, more accessible solution.
